There are a lot of cultural references and allusions at work here, drawing from classical art, music and philosophy.

The game adopts a more industrial revolution-style world, where magic and technology intertwine.

Final Fantasy VI is where the series starts to move away with the whole Crystals routine which, let's face it, was getting pretty tired after Final Fantasy V.

No blank slates here (well, maybe one, but that's kind of the point of them). Look at all these characters! And each one has their own unique ability or point of interest.
